In pictures: The road to Milford Sound

Milford Sound road

On the map it looks like Milford Sound is only 50km from New Zealand’s adventure hotspot Queenstown, but appearances can be deceptive. A huge mountain range means that the road twists and turns its way over 3ookm between the two, with the journey taking over four hours by road. Not a very appealing prospect for a day trip. That is until you get there and find out that the scenery you pass is almost as stunning as Milford Sound itself. On a unusually sunny day (it rains over 180 day a year here) we followed Milford Road as it wound its way past snow-capped mountains, rainforest and clear blue lakes, before reaching the famous fjords of Milford Sound. Best explored by boat, the fjords stretch 15km inland from the ocean, a network of bays with towering cliffs and waterfalls dipping into the deep water below.

    • Ah, that’s so lovely. I’m sure you would absolutely love New Zealand, so many great photo opportunities and such a relaxing place to spend time.

  2. Thanks for sharing such amazing photos! I couldn’t agree more about the trip – stunning and worth every twist and turn. I had the pleasure of turning it into a 2 day trip and highly recommend it. I packed my gear into the rental car and meandered my way down, getting out to hike where ever and when ever I pleased. Stopped to look at the glacier too. Did the overnight boat tour on the MV Friendship and loved it! The Sound is so different in the evening and the morning. Stunning to view and feel. Would recommend the overnight for sure!

    • I was very tight on time so did it all in one day – the coach down and the plane back (which was amazing, though most of my photos are terrible due to plane fear shaky hands!) – but your trip sounds lovely and much more relaxed. I bet that sunset and sunrise over the Sounds are spectacular.

  4. It was an aamzing drive. I had overcast and rainy on the way in, and sunny skies on the way out, so I was lucky to be able to see it in both conditions! I’m a few weeks away from my post about the experience!

    • Look forward to reading your take on it! It started to cloud over later in the day but was incredibly blue to start with. I’ve seen some amazing photos of it in the mist and with huge waterfalls after the rain too so it’s got something whatever the weather!
