My favourite… Sunsets
I’ve been running a series of photos over on Facebook recently, choosing a photo each week of somewhere hot, sunny and exotic to chase away the winter chills. And a lot of them seem to feature spectacular sunsets from around the world. Whether the sun’s setting over the sea, silhouetted against a palm tree or across a city skyline, there’s something warming about those shades of orange, pink and yellow that can’t help but cheer you up. So as the UK braces itself for another week of sleet and icy winds, here are some of my favourite sunsets from around the world – from Indonesian beaches to New York city skyscrapers.

Pastel colours reflected in the sea off Gili Trawangan, Indonesia

Palm trees silhouetted at sunset in Santa Barbara, on a road trip along the coast of California

The sun dips into the sea at Soulac-sur-mer in France’s Haut Medoc wine region near Bordeaux

Sunset behind the ruined Roman citadel in Amman, Jordan

Pink coloured skies over the Bosphorus and the Grand Mosque in Istanbul

Watching the lights come on across New York from a rooftop bar on Fifth Avenue

The sun goes down over Lake Waikaremoana in New Zealand

On a boat between the Gili Islands in Indonesia
Which is your favourite? And where was the most amazing sunset you’ve ever seen?

Something about the Bordeaux photo speaks to me! It’s stunning! As for the best sunsets I have seen?? Croatia comes to mind. Hitchcock once said the best sunsets in the world are in Zadar….I have to say – it was pretty spectacular!
I remember your beautiful Zadar harbour sunset photos – I’ll have to add that one to the collection sometime. That Bordeaux sunset spot was a great one, a little bar on the edge of the beach with some great cold beers.
Excellent photos I like it very much
Thanks, sure you must have seen some fabulous sunsets at sea too!
How do you manage to go to so many places without financial issue? I wish my life is like yours after college : )
Well these were spread out over a long time! I’ve always prioritised saving money for travel – not many expensive nights out or new clothes for me – but have never regretted it.
Those are lovely. What camera do you have? My favorite sunset was on Railay Bay, Krabi
Thanks, they’re a mix of cameras actually – the Bali, New York and Jordan ones are taken with my DSLR (a Nikon D500) and the rest with a compact Olympus Mju. I did a post about my photo kit a while back: http://ontheluce.com/2012/04/20/photography-kit-for-lazy-travellers/
I’ve not been to Krabi but have travelled around the east coast of Thailand and saw some beautiful sunsets (though these are even older and on film so didn’t make it into this post!).
Wud love to see scanned thailand pics
The Bordeaux one is particularly gorgeous.
The best I have witnessed is on the Tonle Sap lake in Cambodia.
I remember watching some lovely sunsets over the lake in Cambodia too. There used to be lots of guesthouses around the shore in Phnon Penh but I hear a lot of them have been knocked down now.
We’re in Santa Barbara now. Do you remember exactly where that picture was taken? I’d love to see it while I’m here.
That’s good timing! I think it was taken from the end of the Stearn’s Wharf pier – the image at the top which is in the homepage slider was from there too, but a bit further down the pier in a bar called Longboards. Hope you get a great sunset there too!
Wow, love the photos! Makes me want to go travel and start my own sunset ‘collection’!
Thanks, I’ve got a few good shots from near home too so you don’t need to go far!
Gorgeous photos Lucy. I love a good sunset! That first one is amazing.
Thanks Monica, the Gili Islands had some of my favourite sunsets, that one was watched with a beer on the beach, could so do with a bit of that now!
That last shot from the Gili islands took me back, way back to 1992. Sigh. Lovely post.
Glad to bring back some good memories – I’ve been scanning a load of old photos this week and its been lovely to relive some of my past travels.
I Love sunset very much, love the photos, Thanks Lucy. Gili Trawangan, wait for me….
Thanks, sure there’ll be a spot waiting on Gili Trawangan beach for you!
Beautiful sunsets Lucy.
Absolutely wonderful! Thank you for sharing!
