My favourite… Beaches

The beach at Carnac on the Cote d'Argent in France

After escaping the English winter with my favourite sunset photos, I’m keeping in with the warming theme by revisiting (mentally rather than physically unfortunately) some of my favourite beaches from around the world next. For me a good beach has got to have a wide patch of sand, a clear blue sea, and preferably plenty of sun so I can take full advantage of it. My favourites stretch across Central America, Australia, the USA and Asia. But they’re not all on tropical islands though, some of the most stunning beaches I’ve seen are in the UK – you just have to be a bit lucky with the weather to take full advantage of them.

Beach at Cap Ferret, Bordeaux, France

This looks like the Caribbean but is actually Cap Ferret near Bordeaux in France

Tropical beach at Manuel Antonio National Park, Costa Rica

The palm-fringed tropical paradise – Manuel Antonio National Park in Costa Rica

The beach at Nusa Lembongan, Bali

Apartments with a view across Nusa Lembongan beach in Bali

Cape Le Grand National park, near Esperance, Western Australia

On the deserted beaches of Cape Le Grand National Park in south Western Australia

Sea kayak on the beach in Abel Tasman National Park, South Island, New Zealand

Kayaking onto one of the many beaches around Abel Tasman National Park in New Zealand

Beach at dusk in Marina in California

A bit rough for swimming – the waves crash on the beach at dusk in Marina in California

Dungy Beach in Dorset, UK

The UK has some beautiful beaches too, this one is just along from Lulworth Cove in Dorset…

Porthminster Beach in St Ives, Cornwall, UK

… and this one is the view Porthminster Beach to the harbour of St Ives in Cornwall

Which is your favourite? And where is the most spectacular beach you’ve ever seen?

  2. Good selection. I remember Lulworth Cove being clogged up with seaweed! My favourite is Cofete Beach on the island of Fuerteventura!

    February 18, 2013
    • I’ve been to Lulworth Cove twice and both times have got very lucky with clear and sunny days! Not visited the Canaries yet but I will remember that one for when I finally make it out there.

  3. They all look like great beeches. Some of my favs are Little Beach in Albany, Western Australia or Coral Bay in WA also.

    February 18, 2013
    • I loved Coral Bay too but don’t have very good photos from there. I don’t remember going to the beach in Albany but I just looked it up and it looks gorgeous!

  4. I know the last two :) beautiful collection ♥

    February 18, 2013
    • Thanks, the UK has some lovely beaches, if only the weather was always like it is in the photos!

  5. These are gorgeous! Makes me glad I have a ebach vacation coming up soon in Puerto Rico.
My favorite beach was in Nicaragua. There were starfish washed up on shore everywhere we looked. It seemed so exotic.

    February 18, 2013
    • A beach of starfish sounds lovely – I’ve hardly scratched the surface of Central America but would love to see more and should get a few more great beaches for the collection by the sound of it!

      February 19, 2013
  6. All gorgeous. I would love to go back to Manuel Antonio, although you didn’t mention the raccoons that come and steal your lunch! :)

    February 18, 2013
    • Them and the monkeys that’ll steal your bag if you’re not careful!

      February 19, 2013
  7. These photos make me want to be somewhere warm.

Best beach?… that is a hard question. The beach near Trinidad de Cuba is pretty awesome.

    February 18, 2013
    • Unfortunately the photos are as near as I’ll get to a tropical beach for a while!

      February 19, 2013
  8. Your pictures are beautiful! I love going to the beach.

What is the water temperature like in Great Britain and in France?

    February 18, 2013
    • The temperatures along the English Channel are usually 15–18°C so it’s got to be a very hot day to get me in the water there! Further down in the south of France you’re into the Mediterranean so it’s a few degrees warmer.

  9. Have to agree about Abel Tasman; Kailuum in Mexico’s Yucatan. Other favorites of mine are in the U.S.–Flagler Beach, Florida (really–it’s a well-kept secret) and Coronado in California, although the Pacific is extremely cold. Kee Beach on Kauai in Hawaii. Padre Island in S. Texas is nice as well. (I’m a huge beach lover, too).

    February 18, 2013
    • Thanks for the tips, I’m hoping to travel more around the US in the next couple of years so will try and fit a couple of these into the itinerary!

      February 19, 2013
  10. Great selection of beaches…I could escape my Canadian winter to any one of them right now! The pinky-red tones of the California shot – gorgeous!!!

    February 18, 2013
    • Me too – the English winter seems to have been dragging on for ever!

      February 19, 2013
  11. Excellent collection! You’re just right, there are so many fantastic beaches right on our doorstep that are often overlooked.

    February 19, 2013
    • There are some amazing beaches in Scotland that look like they should be in the Caribbean, though the weather’s not exactly tropical!

      February 19, 2013
  12. We are big beach fans so this post is perfect for us! We have been to a couple of them already and some of the others are now on our ‘list’. We are off to the beaches of Mexico and Costa Rica over the next couple of months which I can’t wait for! Your photo of Manuel Antonio National Park has got me very excited indeed! Thanks for this great post Lucy

    February 19, 2013
    • Hope you have a great time in Mexico and Costa Rica, sure you’ll see some fabulous beaches out there!

      February 21, 2013
  13. This makes me long for summer and warm weather. How I love the ocean and wish I lived closer to one, One day that will have to be a reality :-) Nice posts and thanks for helping to “warm” up my evening if only through thoughts and feelings.

    February 20, 2013
    • Yes unfortunately this is the nearest I’ll be getting to a beach anytime soon too – I’ll just have to crank up the fire and sit next to that!

      February 21, 2013
  14. That photo of the beach in Costa Rica looks a bit special. My favourite has to be Watergate Bay in north Cornwall – I wish the water was a bit warmer though…

    February 20, 2013
    • The beach/jungle combination in Costa Rica was just about perfect. I do love the Cornish beaches too though, if only we had Costa Rica’s weather (and water temps!).

      February 21, 2013
  15. Nice post Lucy! Our favorite is in Turks and Caicos which we frequent every year since we discovered it

    February 26, 2013
    • The Turks and Caicos sound pretty good right now! There are some amazing beaches in the Caribbean – I really need to go and explore the area a bit more sometime.

      February 26, 2013
  16. This is great. I’m very excited to see Abel Tasman NP in a few weeks, but my favorite beach so far is Railay Beach in Thailand.

    March 2, 2013
    • Abel Tasman was really beautiful, though that water was pretty chilly! I’ve not been to the west coast of Thailand yet but hope to make it out there soon.

      March 3, 2013
  17. The one in California looks like an image from a dream, its mesmerising. And the one in Bordeaux looks like it’ll go on forever..

    March 4, 2013
    • The Bordeaux beach disappeared off into the sea at the end of a sand spit, really gorgeous place and surprisingly unknown.

      March 5, 2013
  18. Ah…this is wonderful.

    March 4, 2013
  19. A fab set of beaches Lucy! The most spectacular I have seen would have to be Ipanema in Rio, as much for its Sunday atmosphere as for its beauty :-)

    March 4, 2013
    • Thanks Madhu, Ipanema Beach is somewhere I would love to go – part of my huge South American wishlist!

      March 5, 2013
  20. Gorgeous, Lucy, just what I needed in cold, rainy Seattle. :) Ailsa

    March 7, 2013
    • Thanks Ailsa, it’s cold and rainy here too, roll on summer!

      March 7, 2013
    • No kidding! :)

      March 7, 2013
  21. The beaches at Cape Le Grand National Park look particularly stunning! What a great way to escape the doldrums of winter, though spring is lurking not far behind. :)

    March 7, 2013
    • Cape Le Grand was so beautiful, and very empty and undeveloped as it’s a national park. Unfortunately I don’t have many photos as it was in my pre-digital days. A nice trip to revisit though in the cold English weather, though we did have a few days of almost spring this week!

      March 7, 2013
  22. All of those are really beautiful white sand beaches. The Lulworth Cove is my favorite – a perfect place to unwind. Sometimes we really need to be away from civilization and have a breath of fresh air.

    March 7, 2013
    • I’ve had some great family holidays around Lulworth Cove, it’s a great place to relax and escape for a few days.

      March 7, 2013
  23. gorgeous photos, and awesome beaches you picked out! I had NO idea the UK even has beaches, and they look just fab!

    March 16, 2013
    • There are some really amazing beaches around the UK, there are some in Scotland that look like they could almost be in the Caribbean (until you feel the temperatures!).

      March 17, 2013
  24. nice pics! i’m sure to enjoy those beaches. hope u get to visit Philippine beaches. :)

    March 19, 2013
  25. Not been to any of these unfortunately, but would definitely recommend Parnidis Dune on the Curonian Spit in Lithuania for a beach with a difference. Not to mention the beach in the centre of St. Petersburg by the fortress!
